Traveling with Marijuana: Airports, Airplanes, and Borders

Smoking cannabis legally in Barcelona

Many visitors who stop by a cannabis club in Barcelona ask themselves the same question before heading home: Can I take some home with me? The answer is no, and that's no small matter. We'll explain why traveling with marijuana is a bad idea, whether on domestic or international flights.

At the airport: a public space

The airport is a public space. In Spain, carrying or using cannabis in public places, public establishments, or on public transportation is punishable by the Organic Law 4/2015 on Public Safety, with fines starting at 601 euros and the removal of the substance.

At security checkpoints, carry-on and checked luggage are screened, and the Civil Guard maintains a permanent presence at airports, including K-9 units.

Flights within Spain

Even if you don't cross any borders, carrying cannabis in your luggage still constitutes possession in a public place. The fact that it is a small amount or intended for personal use does not exempt you from an administrative penalty.

International flights: the risk is much higher

  • Taking cannabis into or out of another country It may be considered trafficking or smuggling, with criminal consequences—not just a fine.
  • Just because it's legal in your country doesn't protect you: Even countries that have legalized cannabis prohibit its import from abroad.
  • Some destinations have very strict laws, with prison sentences for small amounts.
  • Scales: When you make a layover, the laws of the country where you land apply.

What about CBD?

CBD products fall into a gray area. They may contain traces of THC, and regulations vary widely from country to country. If you plan to travel with CBD, check the regulations of your destination country and any countries where you’ll have layovers. Also keep in mind that some products may cause you to test positive on a drug test.

What about medical cannabis?

If you use cannabis for medical reasons, the rules vary by country and usually require specific documentation. Check with your doctor and the embassy or consulate of your destination country before traveling.

What you can do

  • Only use drugs in private and legal settings while you're in Barcelona.
  • Don't keep any leftovers in your suitcase, on your clothes, or in accessories such as grinders, which may contain residue.
  • If you've had something to eat or drink before your flight, keep in mind that you may feel more dizzy or dehydrated during the flight.
